HOPE – Egypt is a grassroots effort whose mission is to develop and offer breast health programs and services that accomplish the following :

Support the needs of women and families touched by breast cancer.

According to the May 2000 National Cancer Network Report, breast cancer is the number one cancer of women in Egypt.

It is estimated that 1 in 9 Egyptian families are or will be affected by breast cancer.

Facilities to identify and treat breast cancer are available in Egypt; however public awareness and access to information and support are very limited.  It has been established that there is a significant and growing need for increased awareness and support of breast health issues in the health care community and the general public.

One way to meet this need is through support groups for cancer patients and survivors and their families, which have proven to be very beneficial in many countries.

Support groups provide opportunities for women to share their breast cancer experiences, feelings, and needs, to be listened to, and to listen to others in a process of finding and keeping hope and learning how to cope successfully with their condition and the new realities of their lives.  Women empowered through their involvement in support groups often become advocates of early detection education and research and provide experienced supports to others newly diagnosed with breast cancer.
